As a marketer, I spend a lot of time getting to know my clients but how much do they know about me? In a recent Q&A, I share some key insights about me, my business and my aspirations for the future as a Mum & Female Boss!
Why did you want to start your own company?
Initially I set up on my own purely as a lifestyle choice to suit the needs of my young family, however I quickly realised that in doing so, I had created a real niche. Without the limitations of running a business by someone else’s rules, I could finally champion an honest and transparent approach to the running of marketing agencies and how they are perceived.. “Cutting the bullshit” for one, and making sure that high quality creative is accessible to all, regardless of business size or price point. It’s here that everything has started to snowball and my organic growth has already exceeded what I originally had planned for. 100% of my business comes through word of mouth referrals from current clients. I’ve never experienced that before in my decade of working in agency – it’s an awesome feeling.
What motivates you?
Happiness. I strive for happiness in all areas of my life, and I will stop at nothing to achieve it. I don’t believe we can be 100% happy all of the time but loving what you do is essential, whether it’s working on a project with a client or enjoying something within your personal life. You must always pursue what makes you happy. No matter how obscure or left field it might be.
My daughter is also a huge motivator for me. She was born on a Blue Moon (so it won’t take too much to guess the reason behind my business name!!) and I owe A LOT to her. “I gave up” traditional maternity leave that consists of twelve months out of work for about 7 days out of work to ensure I could launch my business and give it a fighting chance of success. It was the hardest year of my life keeping a baby and a business alive but with the support of my amazing family, friends, and clients, I did it and I’m so happy at what I have achieved. If my daughter can grow up thinking “wow my Mum did that” then my mission really will be accomplished.
What do you do in your free time?
Apart from chasing my nearly two-year old around the play park, two things. Weight lifting and working on my mindset. Neither of which are easy but all so rewarding in the process. Although being my own boss enables me to work my business around my personal life, one of my biggest challenges is not being able to switch off so I’m making a conscious effort to try and be more “present” when I’m not at work. Easier said than done though!! Anyone who has mastered this please hit me up!
What are you excited about for the next year?
Growing. Becoming a mother encouraged me to grow in many ways but it’s definitely made me hungrier for career success. In a matter of months I’ve gone from being a one-woman freelancer to wanting to launch a fully fledged marketing agency. I’m also about to turn the big “three-zero” this year so it would be an awesome milestone to enter my thirties with my career at its peak.
What are 3 random facts about me?
- Tattoos are my guilty pleasure – I’ve recently had my 8th tattoo of a Blue Moon to symbolise my daughter.
- I never share food. I might be sweet and innocent on the outside but food is one area I simply do not compromise on!
- Everyone questions my nationality! Thai, Chinese, Italian, Turkish, Egyptian – you name it, I’ve had it all. Sadly, my claim to fame isn’t so exotic – I am 100% born and bred in the North East haha!
